Carlisle & Eden Public Services Alliance are holding a march and rally in Carlisle on Saturday 22nd January 2011. This is the latest in their ongoing campaign events to engage with the local community over the coalition Government's draconian program of cuts to out public services.
The event is to be supported by Carlisle & Eden Green Party, along with Trade Unions, community groups and concerned citizens. The aim of the march and rally is to increase awareness amongst the Cumbrian public of the effects of the cuts in public spending, the alternatives that should be considered and the role that they can play in preserving our public services that play an important role in our society - the services that may be lost forever following these cuts.
As Cumbrian public service organisations are beginning to announce the results of these cuts we can be sure that these are only the start of what will be four years of cuts and reductions to quality of life for Cumbrian people. With an estimated 21,000 public sector employees in the area and many thousand recipients of benefits that are being slashed, this will also have a huge knock-on effect for our local economy as our spending power is reduced.
The Public Services Alliance is seeking to build support for a different approach. We will be marching through Carlisle then holding a rally and distributing leaflets to the public which highlight the damage that the cuts will do to our communities. We will also be promoting the real and viable alternatives to cuts in jobs, public services and the welfare state that the government don’t want people to hear about. We invite all people that are concerned about these issues to march with us on Saturday 22nd January.
